Module description

This module will introduce you to the core knowledge and skills of occupational therapy, enabling you to develop an understanding of the occupational nature of human beings.

Module aims

This module will introduce you to the core knowledge and skills of occupational therapy, enabling you to develop an understanding of the occupational nature of human beings. You will be encouraged to consider yourself and others as occupational beings, in order to relate relevant theories to occupational therapy as a profession.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
1. Define occupational therapy and explore the core skills of an occupational therapist
2. Discuss the meaning of occupation and identify yourself and others as occupational beings
3. Describe and discuss the theoretical framework that underpins the occupational therapy profession

Module information

The module is delivered 2 afternoons per week in the autumn term, with one morning per week of self-directed study. You will start to develop an understanding of your professional identity in relation to the core tenets of occupational therapy and have an opportunity to practice some core skills.

Learning and teaching methods

Overview: Taking a developmental approach to the programme, this first occupational therapy specific module will provide opportunities for interactive, dialectical learning supported by key lectures. Small group work, tutorials and seminars will form the basis of the exploratory learning nature of this module. The emphasis will be to commence your development of skills in occupational therapy practice and self-directed study. Lectures: Key note lectures will focus upon core concepts. Independent: Learning will take place within learner led small groups and individual study. Online: Using a blended learning approach you will be expected to engage and contribute to online group activities and use of online library facilities. A module Moodle page will support your learning on this module. Tutorials: There will be formative and summative assessment tutorials. However, the emphasis for this module will be on your ability to articulate your informed thinking on specific subject areas within an informal tutorial milieu. Placement: Whilst this module does not include placement experience, your learning from this module will inform your work on future taught modules, practice placements and beyond. Skills: You will be supported in developing your skills in areas such as; observation, communication and activity/occupational analysis.
