Module description

This is your first inter-professional module, and brings together Occupational Therapy students from the School of Health & Social Care (HSC) and Physiotherapy students from the School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Science (SRES).

The module will provide the opportunity to explore and develop your understanding of professional and interprofessional working in health and social care environments. The module will also address the foundation skills that underpin your practice as an allied health professional. You will be introduced to the continuing professional development requirements of the regulatory body, Health and Care Professions Council, which will enable you to start the process of reflecting upon and planning your ongoing development.

Module aims

The aim of the module is to introduce the concepts of professional and interprofessional practice and provide opportunities to develop understanding of the role of continuing professional development for health professionals.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

1. Identify the concepts and roles of professional and interprofessional practice within health and social care contexts in exploring the development of your professional and interprofessional identity
2. Demonstrate the effective use of relevant and appropriate evidence to inform your learning
3. Demonstrate your understanding of the role of CPD in your journey as a health professional student

Module information

The module is delivered throughout the full academic year. You will examine and develop the foundation skills and knowledge in relation to professional practice and inter-professional working. Within module sessions you will have the opportunity to draw on these skills and knowledge, and apply them within practical, inter-professional group tasks and projects. These experiential sessions will help form the basis of your continuing professional development.

Learning and teaching methods

Overview: The emphasis for this module will be on inter-personal and inter-disciplinary interaction. Tutors will facilitate some discussions within seminar sessions from which enquiry based learning (EBL) and self-directed initiatives will be developed. Lectures: Key note lectures will introduce you to concepts and related knowledge of inter-professional working. These will form the basis on which collaborative, group working and independent learning will be focused. Independent: You will work in small inter-professional groups using an EBL approach to further explore concepts and related knowledge introduced within key note lectures. You will combine EBL with self-directed, independent learning to consolidate your learning of the module. Placement: Whilst this module does not include placement learning your learning from this module will inform your work on future taught modules, practice placements, and beyond. For example, by enabling you to understand and articulate the importance of inter-professional working. Online: Using a blended learning approach you will be expected to engage and contribute to online group activities and use of online library facilities. A module Moodle page will support your learning on this module. Tutorials: There will be formative and summative assessment tutorials. However, the emphasis for this module will be on your ability to articulate your informed thinking on specific subject areas within an informal tutorial milieu. Skills: You will be supported in developing your skills in areas such as; accessing databases, using library catalogues, finding appropriate tools for critiquing articles, accessing professional and regulatory body information and documentation. You will be given a framework on which to base your engagement with the CPD process in order to identify your further development needs.

  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
