Module description

This module introduces students to typical development across the lifespan. Students will explore language, cognitive, social and emotional development from birth to older aging adults. An emphasis is placed on developing underpinning knowledge required for later modules and professional practice.

Module aims

This module aims to develop your understanding of typical development and ageing across the lifespan. It also aims to develop your understanding of underlying skills, such as attention & memory, which are required for successful communication.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge of typical language and literacy development across the lifespan,

Recognise that typical speech language and communication and literacy includes a spectrum of ability and individual differences

Demonstrate knowledge of the development of cognitive, social and emotional skills across the lifespan

Discuss the impact of underlying cognitive, emotional and social skills on speech, language, literacy and communication abilities of individuals

Module information

This module takes a topical approach to lifespan development and is delivered half a day per week throughout autumn & spring terms via interactive lectures & workshops. You will be expected to actively participate in classroom activities, engage in learner led small groups and work independently to truly understand the content at a deep level. This will help enable you to understand communication difficulties later in the degree programme.

Learning and teaching methods

Taking a developmental approach to the programme, this early speech and language therapy module will be delivered through a combination of interactive lectures, small group learner led workshops and individual study.
