Module description

This module introduces students to anatomy and physiology relevant to the Speech & language therapy profession.


Students will consider how structures and functions of the body relate to typical speech, language, and swallowing processes and developmental & acquired difficulties. Emphasis is placed on developing a solid foundation for future modules and clinical practice.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To develop your knowledge of the structures and functions of the human body that underpin typical speech, language and swallowing processes.

  • To begin to relate your knowledge of anatomy, physiology and neurology to developmental & acquired conditions.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of body systems relevant to the Speech & Language Therapy profession.

  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the functions of body systems relevant to the Speech & Language Therapy profession.

  3. Apply knowledge of the structure and function of relevant body systems to describe typical speech, language, and swallowing processes.

  4. Begin to understand how the structure and function of relevant body systems are involved in developmental and acquired conditions relevant to Speech & Language Therapy

Module information

This module is delivered one day a week throughout the autumn term. In addition to some traditional introductory lectures where tutors will share information you will be expected to work in small groups and independently to truly understand the content at a deep level. This will help enable you to apply your knowledge in later modules and in future practice.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered through a combination of key note lecture time, learner-led small groups, and individual study.

Lecture/classroom-based: Keynote lecture time will introduce students to core anatomy and physiology relevant to the Speech & Language Therapy profession.

Independent study: Learning will take place via learner-led small groups and individual study.

Technology-Enhanced Learning: Using a blended learning approach, students will be expected to engage and contribute to online activities and use of online library facilities, anatomy and physiology internet-based resources, and peer platforms.

Tutorial/seminar-based: Students are encouraged to access individual or small group tutorial support for areas of difficulty. Academic staff are available for tutorial support by appointment.
