This module provides an introduction to practice-based learning that will enable you to begin developing your readiness for becoming an SLT in the multi professional workplace.
The aims of this module are:
- To begin to develop professional identity and skills essential to becoming an SLT.
- To provide opportunity to integrate academic learning from term 1 and current modules.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of the professional values expected of registrant Speech and Language Therapists
- Begin to develop professional identity as SLTs working as part of multi professional teams
- Demonstrate emergent professional skills in placement locations e.g. linking language and literacy skills across the lifespan, adapting and modifying communication approaches
- Begin planning for lifelong professional development
Professional body requirements
- In order to meet accreditation requirements students will be required to complete placements in varied settings, across the lifespan with supporting university workshops to develop key skills.

- Mandatory placement preparation sessions covering key clinical and professional skills

Independent:
Self-guided learning: This involves the student undertaking independent study using a range of learning resources including: recommended reading, course study notes, library resources, resources in the SLT laboratory, IT resources and appropriate tutorial support.
Placement: This module underpins later learning in readiness for placement activity. It will be required when considering equitable care throughout placement experiences.
Online: Students are directed to online resources as appropriate, SLT laboratory and professional & government websites. Lecture materials and additional publications are included on the online Moodle page.
Tutorials: Students are encouraged to access individual or small group tutorial support for areas of difficulty. Academic staff are available for tutorial support by appointment.
Students are expected to undertake the reading before classes and be prepared to engage in discussion.

- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
