This is a full year module available only to students in the Department of Government undertaking a placement which will be linked to an independent research project, replacing the standard final year project.
The module enables students to undertake a short placement (a minimum of 150 hours) with an external Placement Provider. The student will be required to complete an independent research project which is informed by their placement, and additionally will complete a number of reflective tasks relating to their placement. The student will actively use the links between the knowledge and skills developed in their academic course, and the work-based skills and knowledge developed in carrying out their placement role, to inform a research project based on a specified aspect of their placement work

The syllabus will be determined on an individual basis for each student on the basis of the placement they are undertaking. The Department and Placement Provider will agree the focus of the placement via the Learning Agreement, and this will ensure that the student is able to meet the module learning outcomes set out in the previous section of this form.
The learning and teaching methods will be dependent on the placement and will be recorded for an individual student on the training agreement signed by the Placement Provider, the student, and the University.
Each student will be assigned to an Academic Supervisor in their Department, and a Placement Supervisor named by the Placement Provider.
Students will work closely with their Academic Supervisor and Placement Supervisor to develop and deliver an independent research project relating to their work, liaising with them throughout the work placement and as necessary after the placement has ended in order to allow the student to complete the project.
The Academic Supervisor will be appointed prior to the student undertaking their placement, and will work closely with the student and Placement Provider to define the subject of the Project and to ensure the placement is structured to enable the student to engage with the project. The Academic Supervisor will contact the student at defined points throughout the placement and will be available via email and phone as necessary during the placement period.
Students will additionally be provided with the contact details of administrative staff in the Department who will be contactable throughout the placement; and with the details of the Employability Coordinator for Social Sciences who will be available to students throughout their placement to provide advice and support in relation to generic work-based learning issues.
