This module will develop the students' critical thinking capacity, and develop their investigative skills required for independent research projects of different forms. The module will also provide important preparation for students to choose what type of final year project they wish to complete, as well as helping students improve their research skills and hone basic writing skills. The modules aims to help students to think critically while also developing insights into a variety of current topics that interconnect with politics.
The aims of this module are:
- To develop student’s ability to critically assess and discuss a variety of issues in politics
- To develop the students’ capacity to produce original research
- To develop students’ ability to adjudicate between competing theories or arguments
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- To improve the students’ abilities to research and construct a literature review
- To improve general writing skills in a concise fashion
- To improve students’ abilities to formulate a research question and put together a research design
- To learn how to conceptualize key concepts
- To learn how to gather data and analyse it in a concise fashion

- Five two-hour sessions in weeks 30-34 of the summer term.
- 45-60 minutes of lecture followed by in-class activities (combination of written and small group discussion)
