This module enables students to acquire the understanding and knowledge of the operational characteristics of a high-quality event business enabling the business to achieve its objectives in the international context of the global market for international events.
The aims of this module are:
- To allow students to critically examine dynamic factors including event logistics, event planning, risk management, and event evaluation.
- To provide the means for students to recognise the importance of effective teamwork as critical in delivering excellence to the client / consumer.
- To introduce the legal and regulatory context in which events operate, understand and use basic financial and costing skills, and utilise relevant technology to enhance business performance.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Critically analyse the key resources required of an event operation.
- Critically evaluate the significance of the global market for international events including mega-events and the MICE sector.
- Critique the life cycle of events from concept through to legacy including feasibility, planning, delivery, sustainability impact, and evaluation.
- Critically apply risk management and financial management procedures to the operation of events.

- The interrelationship and impacts on the operation of the three key resources required of an event.
- Significance of the global market for international events
- Destination management.
- Event tourism.
- Gaps in the global marketplace.
- Attitude to risk.
- Emerging locations.
- Event typology.
- MICE sector.
- Mega events.
- Life cycle of events
- The systems and processes used in events management.
- Environmental impact of events.
- Concept, design, proposal, feasibility, planning, delivery, evaluation.
- Risk management and financial management
- Financial documents.
- Financial procedures including budgeting, revenue, costs, profit, and loss.
- Sources of funding.
- Sponsorships including headline sponsors, title sponsors, satellite sponsors.
This module will be delivered via:
- One 2-hour lecture per week
- One 1-hour seminar per week
Lectures, seminars, and workshops will form the main methods for the delivery of this module and students will be expected to access and prepare for such sessions using the EHS online virtual learning environment and resources. Where relevant, both operational and management information derived from the Wivenhoe House will be used in academic sessions.
Students are expected to undertake the reading before classes and be prepared to engage in discussion.

- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
