Module description

This module offers insight into a range of current international business issues, management dilemmas, and corporate governance (such as ethical considerations and sustainability solutions) relating to the strategic direction and culture of organisations.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To engage in critical analysis of different strategic options developing a critical understanding of the nature of strategic change, change management strategies, and overcoming barriers and resistance to strategic change.

  • To analyse the strategic implications of managing within dynamic industry environments and evaluate the necessary theories, tools and skills needed to develop realistic, coherent, and effective strategy for hospitality organisations.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Critique the application of culture and strategic growth in international hospitality organisations.

  2. Devise and justify appropriate vision and mission statements aligned with strategic culture and growth.

  3. Evaluate internal and external forces that determine the need for strategic cultural change and identify barriers and resistance to change.

  4. Critically analyse culture change management strategies within the international hospitality industry.

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures, seminars and workshops will form the main methods for the delivery of this module and you will be expected to access and prepare for such sessions using the EHS online virtual learning environment and resources.  Where relevant, both operational and management information derived from the Wivenhoe House will be used in academic sessions.

This module will be delivered via:

  • One 2-hour lecture per week
  • One 1-hour seminar per week

Students are expected to undertake the reading before classes and be prepared to engage in discussion.
