This module introduces you to the regulatory frameworks for corporate bodies and the key financial documents into context (such as profit and loss, cash flow and balance sheets). Financial ratios and comparative measures are described and analysed in the context of micro-economics both internally and industry wide.
The aims of this module are:
- To provide you with a broad knowledge of financial accounting and how managerial accounting reports are used to identify weak areas for the business.
- To learn techniques to calculate and improve key performance indicators as well the knowledge to build a profit and loss statement, cash flow and balance sheet.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Interpret key financial documents used by hospitality, tourism and event businesses and construct these from given data.
- Critically evaluate financial statements and apply KPIs to measure overall and departmental performance.
- Understand the micro-economic theory of the firm and how this can be applied to analyse and improve business performance.
- Apply concepts to actual live data and report on performance.

Lectures, seminars and workshops will form the main methods for the delivery of this module and you will be expected to access and prepare for such sessions using the EHS online virtual learning environment and resources. Where relevant, both operational and management information derived from the Wivenhoe House will be used in academic sessions.
This module will be delivered via:
- One 2-hour lecture per week
- One 1-hour seminar per week
Students are expected to undertake the reading before classes and be prepared to engage in discussion.
