This module provides an introduction to some of the main principles and practices of human resource management and organizational behaviour within Hospitality organisations.
The module combines lectures with work in small groups and individual study to provide students with an understanding of both the methods of managing a multi-cultural workforce and a critical understanding of contemporary management approaches to organisational behaviour for the international hospitality industry
The aims of this module are:
- To develop the skills necessary to effectively recruit, appraise, develop, and manage reward systems for personnel as well as gain an understanding of how hospitality organisations behave and react to their environments.
- To gain an understanding of recruitment processes and ethical employment practices, acquiring the knowledge and developing the skills to independently manage these processes.
- To evaluate current philosophies for rewarding and performance managing people and awareness of how human resources influences organisational behaviour.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- To critically analyse the recruitment process human resources should follow to ensure fair recruitment practices.
- To critically evaluate the strategic relevance and impact of performance reviews and training on organisational behaviour.
- Analyse the role of human resources management in staff development and retention, considering reward management strategies
- To critically discuss ethical employment practices in hospitality organisations
Indicative Content
- To critically analyse the recruitment process human resources should follow to ensure fair recruitment practices.
- Critically review role of Human Resources Management within the business
- Recruitment and selection, and fair recruitment practices
- Recruitment documents and processes including person specifications, job description, adverts, shortlisting, interviews and interview analysis, contracts, rights to work checks and references
- Use of technological advances and tools used in the recruitment process
- Analyse the role of relevant employment legislation and HR good practice in driving Human Resources Management effectiveness in hospitality operations
- To critically evaluate the strategic relevance and impact of performance reviews and training on organisational behaviour.
- To determine the impact of performance management tactics such as appraisals, on organisational behaviour.
- Different types of appraisals and the appraisal process
- Induction and training
- Staff motivation and retention
- Talent management and succession planning
- Models, theories and concepts that influence organisational behaviour including soft versus hard HR, psychological, social and anthropological approaches
- Analyse the role of human resources management in staff development and retention, considering reward management strategies and impact on organiational behaviour
- Strategic importance of rewards and impact on organisational behaviour
- Intrinsic versus extrinsic rewards
- Induction and training
- Probation and disciplinary procedures
- Application of Motivation theory to rewards
- To critically discuss ethical employment practices in hospitality organisations
- Corporate social responsibility, the Triple Bottom Line theory (people, profit, planet) and the CSR pyramid (Carroll, 1979)
- Impact of ethical employment practices on stakeholders
- Strategic importance of ethical employment practices
- Contemporary employment issues such as zero-hours contracts, modern slavery, shift work and pay.
Lectures, seminars and workshops will form the main methods for the delivery of this module and you will be expected to access and prepare for such sessions using the EHS online virtual learning environment and resources. Where relevant, both operational and management examples will be given and applied to theory during your teaching sessions.
