Module description

This module will provide you with an understanding of the need for effective human resources practices within hospitality in relation to, recruitment, retention and talent acquisition. You will develop a critical awareness of the role of performance and reward management strategies on staff motivation, retention and business performance and will develop competence in carrying out job interviews and selecting the right candidates within hospitality recruitment.

Module aims

The aims of this module are to enable students to:



  • Evaluate the concept of Human Resource Management and recruitment giving consideration to relevant employment legislation.
    - Critically review role of Human Resources Management within the business;
    - Analyse the role of relevant employment legislation and HR good practice in driving Human Resources Management effectiveness in hospitality or event operations.

  • Critically evaluate the impact of strategic talent acquisition, performance management and employee relations on event and hospitality operations.
    - Talent management, induction, appraisals, key performance indicators;
    - Training and development;
    - Critical analysis of relationship between the organisation and its employees. Employee Relations strategy, policy and practice and conflict management.

  • Evaluate the role, purpose and function of performance and reward management strategies.
    - Evaluate impact of performance and reward systems on the business, department and individual levels within hospitality;
    - Staff motivation and retention.

  • Demonstrate interviewing skills.
    - Carry out interviews as part of a panel;
    - Devise and ask suitable interview questions to ask applicants;
    - Create and complete interview analysis forms;
    - Reflect on interviewing skills.

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:

Learning and teaching methods

Learning and teaching will take the shape of classroom-based lectures and seminars where Wivenhoe House will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate practice. Self-managed learning will supplement seminars where you will be provided with guidance on required reading and online learning resources.
