The aim of this module is to develop your awareness of entrepreneurship and innovation so that you have an awareness of the knowledge and skills needed to start a business in the hospitality and event industry.
You will be expected to create an innovative business plan considering all relevant constraints and describe actions to comply with these. The plan will be expected to show how the business will be sustained and contingencies if targets are not met and options for expansion. This must be justified using valid and reliable research.
The aims of this module are to enable students to:
Understand and apply the business start up process and the role of innovation in gaining entry to a market as well as gaining a competitive advantage:
New business start up process;
Projected Profit and loss, cash flow and balance sheets;
Changing technological environment of business and its implications;
Innovation theory;
Management of innovation;
Re-engineering businesses;
Competitive advantage.
Critically evaluate the market environment and financial projections for the new business compared to hospitality and event industry benchmarks:
Competitor analysis;
Environmental impact / trends;
Creating financial projections.
Construct a business plan that sets out the structure, funding, profitability and marketing of the business:
Business plan development;
Profitability ROI;
Organizational structure;
Cost control;
Marketing planning.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:

Learning and teaching will take the shape of classroom-based lectures and seminars where Wivenhoe House will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate practice. Self-managed learning will supplement seminars where you will be provided with guidance on required reading and online learning resources.
