Module description

This module continues your development from the level 4 Tourism Operations by providing you with the opportunity to develop the knowledge of operational management within visitor attractions. This module will further develop your knowledge and application required for the successful planning and organising of the delivery of products and services to customers in all aspects of visitor management operations. You will understand the value of data to inform managers on trends, performance and analysis and review the use of technology applied to the running of a visitor attraction business.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To determine and critically evaluate the resources required within the operations of visitor attractions.

    • Explore resource management: human, physical, (e.g., materials, equipment), and financial (including purchasing and stock control).

    • Identify management tools in resource planning.



  • To critically evaluate the skills required to deliver the services and products being produced for visitors.

    • Skills needs analysis

    • Explore customers’ expectations of service delivery (e.g., exploration of online review sites and customer feedback)

    • Identify visitor service and product improvements (e.g., accessibility; ticketing; visitor queues and flows, etc.)



  • To critically analyse operational functions and business performance of visitor attractions.

    • Explore performance reports, annual reviews, and operational policies (e.g., Equality Act, 2010; Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI))

    • Identify the KPI’s relevant to visitor attractions at operational level

    • Evaluate benchmarking strategies, organisational expectations, and industry standards



  • To understand the application of data and technology for managing visitor attraction businesses.

    • Understand data sources and data management and the application of such data

    • Evaluate advances and trends in technology (e.g., online booking and ticketing)

    • Analyse the application of technologies (e.g., QR codes, Virtual (VR) and Augmented Realities (AR), sustainable services and experiences)

Learning and teaching methods

Learning and teaching will take the shape of classroom based lectures and seminars where Wivenhoe House will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate practice. Self-managed learning will supplement seminars where you will be provided with guidance on required reading and online learning resources.
