Module description

The purpose of this module is for you to consolidate your professional and personal learning and to focus on the development of techniques and strategies for self-management of your continuous professional development.


You will develop critical self-reflection skills as well as provide an understanding of the role and relevance of research for managers in decision-making. The module will also provide opportunity to develop a range of skills to prepare you for career advancement and employment opportunities.

Module aims

The aims of this module are to:



  1. Critically reflect on professional and personal development.



  • The role of lifelong learning in career development

  • Identification of career and personal goals



  1. Evaluate and review the key employment opportunities presented by the hospitality industry



  • Understanding personal strengths and weaknesses in seeking employment opportunities

  • Developing a professional cv

  • Making a job application

  • Interviewing techniques

  • The role and importance of professional associations and networks

  • The importance of ethics and values in personal and corporate behavior 



  1. Construct a detailed personal development plan



  • Methods of developing a plan

  • Monitoring a personal development plan 



  1. Understand the principles of research design and evaluate a range of research methods

Learning and teaching methods

Learning and teaching will take the shape of classroom-based lectures and seminars where Wivenhoe House will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate practice. Self-managed learning will supplement seminars where you will be provided with guidance on required reading and online learning resources.
