Module description

This module will enable you to critically evaluate and apply knowledge and skills in strategic and performance management in your development as a leader of high performance teams to deliver business excellence. You will analyse and apply key concepts, tools and processes to develop relevant, realistic, coherent and creative business strategy. The module will develop skills and knowledge to enable you to critically analyse business performance, interpret the key performance indicators and utilise appropriate tools, techniques and technology for effective planning and review of finance and quality. You will evaluate approaches and characteristics of effective leadership of high performance teams.

Module aims

This module aims to enable you to:

1. Critically review and capably apply underlying theories, approaches, models and tools that inform current best practice in project and risk management of the strategic plan.

2. Apply analytical tools for planning: eg soft systems charting;
3. Undertake hotel management planning, including: project planning, strategic decision making and risk assessment;

4. Hotel management processes, including: programming, scheduling, marketing, communications and public relations, commercial strategies, risk, health and safety, monitoring, evaluation and review.

5. Critically evaluate and apply in practice the underlying principles of ethics and social responsibility in business decision making.

6. Ethics and Social responsibility – constructs, principles;

7. Nature of the management decision process;

8. Hospitality environmental issues.

9. Calculate, analyse and interpret financial and operational data and performance indicators to inform management decisions and problem solving.

10. Calculating and Interpreting Financial Reports and Operational Performance Ratios e.g. Corporate and Unit Financial statements (BS, P&L, CF) Departmental Financial Reports, Profitability Ratios, Liquidity Ratios, Efficiency Ratios, Benchmarks.

11. Critically examine the role of the leader in developing and delivering successful strategic performance within hotel operations.

12. Leadership theory and the practice of effective dynamic leadership;

13. The role of the leader in developing and delivering business strategy;

14. Leadership approaches for effective change management.

Module learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this module you should be able to:

1. Critically review and capably apply underlying theories, approaches, models and tools that inform current best practice in project and risk management of the strategic plan.

2. Critically evaluate and apply in practice the underlying principles of ethics and social responsibility in business decision making.

3. Calculate, analyse and interpret financial and operational data and performance indicators to inform management decisions and problem solving.

Learning and teaching methods

Learning and teaching will take the shape of either classroom based or online lectures and seminars where Wivenhoe House will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate practice. Self-managed learning will supplement seminars where you will be provided with guidance on required reading and on-line learning resources.
