Module description

This module will enable you to acquire the understanding and knowledge of the operational characteristics of a tourism business enabling the business to achieve its objectives.


You will understand the process of the tourism business and recognise the opportunities and challenges of operating tourism business across the various sectors.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • Understand the key resources of a tourism business

    • Explore the characteristics (e.g., intangibility, perishability, inseparability, and variability) of a tourism business such as a tour operator, visitor attraction, etc.

    • Understand the 5A’s of tourism products (Accommodation, Accessibility, Activities, Amenities, and Attraction).



  • Evaluate the importance and significance of marketing, financial and human resource management functions within tourism business operations

    • Understand the functional roles of different tourism departments.

    • Explore the systems and processes used in tourism for the management of functions and resources.

    • The use of technology in tourism operational functions.



  • Analyse operational data to determine business performance

    • Understand and interpret financial concepts (e.g., profit, sales mix, volume of sales, cash flow and undertake simple calculations).

    • Appreciate the importance of and interpret basic financial documents (e.g., balance sheet, profit and loss, annual report).

    • Understand cost behaviour and pricing policies.

Learning and teaching methods

The module will be delivered via:

  • Lectures
  • Seminars
  • Workshops

Students will be expected to access and prepare for such sessions using the EHS online virtual learning environment and resources.  Where relevant, both operational and management information derived from the Wivenhoe House will be used in academic sessions, as will observations from your work experience. Other tourism and hospitality organisations will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate best practice across industries to supplement learning.
