Module description

This is an introductory module that will provide a holistic overview of tourism management. The module content is a fundamental course that explores the context of tourism development, its current position, and influences on the demand for tourism.


The structure of the module will provide an understanding of the nature and meaning the industry and its management challenges to fully explore the context of tourism. This module utilises theoretical and practical aspects of tourism management as deployed by tourism organisations, business, and destinations.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To explore the context of tourism and its management

    • Define what is the meaning of tourism.

    • Explore tourism in its historical context.

    • Understand domestic and international travel patterns.



  • Identify and evaluate the key influences on tourism demand

    • Explore tourist’s needs, wants, and motivations.

    • Evaluate different factors that influence consumer behaviour.

    • Identify factors influencing changes in tourist demands (e.g., technological trends, patterns, and forecasting).



  • Demonstrate an understanding of tourism supply.

    • Explore the management of visitors.

    • Understand the role of the public and private sectors within the tourism industries. 



  • Evaluate sociocultural, economic, and environmental impacts on tourism businesses, destinations, and host communities.

    • Explore the socio-cultural effects of tourism (e.g., Demonstration Effect).

    • Explore the economic effects of tourism (e.g., Tourism Area Lifecycle - TALC, Multiplier Effect, etc.). 

    • Explore the environmental effects of tourism (e.g., UNSDGs, sustainable tourism, etc.).



  • Understand the structure and organisation of tourism and travel industries (e.g., DMOs, Tourist Generating Regions, Intermediaries, etc.).

    • Identify the network of sectors within tourism industries (e.g., Leiper’s model). 

    • Explain the chain of distribution and how it applies within the tourism industries.

By the end of the module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Explore the context of tourism and its management.

  2. Identify and evaluate the key influences on tourism demand.

  3. Demonstrate an understanding of tourism supply.

  4. Evaluate socio-cultural, economic, and environmental impacts on tourism businesses, destinations, and host communities.

  5. Understand the structure and organisation of tourism and travel industries (e.g., Destination Management Organisations (DMOs), tourist generating regions, intermediaries, etc.).

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • Lectures.
  • Seminars.
  • Workshops.

Students will be expected to access and prepare for such sessions using the Edge Hotel School online virtual learning environment and resources.
