Module description

This module will introduce you to weddings, commemorative, and cultural festivals. It will facilitate understanding in the processes of wedding venue operations for recognising opportunities and challenges. The module also provides insights into the definitions and theories of cultural festivals and their evolution exploring current societal trends affecting these types of festivals and events through a range of ethnic, religious, sociological, and cultural viewpoints.

Module aims

The aims of this module are to enable students to:



  • Evaluate the effectiveness of wedding venue operations (in a specific context, e.g., WHH):

    • Understand the planning processes of weddings.

    • Appreciate the various aspects in wedding operations.

    • Recognise the procurement of services in weddings.



  • Recommend areas for improvement in wedding venue operations (in a specific context, e.g., WHH):

    • Recognise opportunities and challenges in wedding planning.

    • Critique wedding venue operations for improvements.



  • Demonstrate an understanding of the origins, definitions, and theories of festivals:

    • Define celebratory, ceremonial, commemorative, and/or cultural events.

    • Understand the historical evolvement of cultural and ceremonial events and festivals in a range of cultures.



  • Identify current societal trends affecting cultural festivals:

    • Understand the effects of festivals on the local area.

    • Recognise changing trends in society affecting festivals.

    • Investigate the social legacy of festivals and events.

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Evaluate the effectiveness of wedding venue operations (in a specific context, e.g., WHH).

  2. Recommend areas for improvement in wedding venue operations (in a specific context, e.g., WHH).

Learning and teaching methods

The module will be delivered via:

  • Lectures
  • Seminars
  • Workshops

Students will be expected to access and prepare for such sessions using the EHS online virtual learning environment and resources.  Where relevant, both operational and management information derived from the Wivenhoe House will be used in academic sessions, as will observations from your work experience. Other hotel, events and other hospitality organisations will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate best practice across industries to supplement learning.
