You will analyse the strategic implications of managing within dynamic industry environments and evaluate the necessary theories, tools and skills needed to develop realistic, coherent and effective strategy for hospitality and events organisations.
You will engage in critical analysis of different strategic options developing a critical understanding of vision and mission statements, and the nature of strategic change. You will provide a critical analysis of change management strategies, and overcoming barriers and resistance to strategic change.
The aims of this module are to enable students to:
- Evaluate the applicability and limitations of major underpinning models and theories of strategic management in guiding strategic direction:
- Growth strategy, tactics, planned/emergent strategy, generic strategies.
- Competitive advantage.
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of strategic vision and missions for directing hospitality organisations:
- Developing a strategic vision; the process and implications.
- Mission, vision statements and core values within the industry.
- Analyse internal and external forces that act as stimuli for strategic change, barriers and resistance to change:
- Value chain analysis, competitor analysis and best value strategy.
- External and internal forces for organizational change.
- Barriers to change.
- Organisational culture and change.
- Overcoming resistance to change.
- Transitions of change/change curve.
- Critically analyse change management strategies within the contemporary hospitality and events industry:
- Implementing planned change.
- Concept of organisational development – transformation, creativity and innovation and competitive advantage; learning organisations.
- Change management techniques/models.
- Communication of change.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Evaluate the applicability and limitations of major underpinning models and theories of strategic management in guiding strategic direction.
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of strategic vision and missions for directing hospitality organisations.
- Analyse internal and external forces that act as stimuli for strategic change, barriers and resistance to change.
- Critically analyse change management strategies within the contemporary hospitality and events industry.

- Classroom based lectures and seminars, where Wivenhoe House will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate practice.
Self-managed learning will supplement seminars where you will be provided with guidance on required reading and on-line learning resources.
