Module description

This module will enable you to analyse current concepts in the event and hospitality sector. You will analyse the management structure of the different operations and the systems deployed to ensure high levels of customer satisfaction and profitability in relation to deploying staff. You will consider
the importance and development of revenue management to the sustainability of the industry together with a consideration of how other industries have shaped or influenced the hotel and hospitality industry. Finally a continuation of further consideration of contemporary issues that impact the industry.

Module aims

This module aims to enable you to:

1. Critically analyse the management structure and staffing deployment across a range of event and hospitality operations.
- Management and organisation structures within the event and hospitality industry;
- Approaches to staffing deployment in relation to organisation structure and operational characteristics.

2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of revenue management relevant to the
contemporary event and hospitality industry.
- The concept and importance of revenue management;
- Development of the concept of revenue management historical to present day;
- Approaches to revenue management within the contemporary event and hospitality industry.

3. Evaluate the influences of other industry developments on the contemporary event and hospitality industry.
- Consideration of how organisation systems, products and services within the event and hospitality industry have been formed from developments in other industries eg. retail, airline industries.

4. Demonstrate a critical understanding of contemporary issues concerning current event and hospitality markets.
- Current issues facing the event and hospitality markets and how the industry is responding.

Module learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this module you should be able to:
1. Critically analyse the management structure and staffing deployment across a range of event and hospitality operations.
2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of revenue management relevant to the contemporary event and hospitality industry.
3. Evaluate the influences of other industry developments on the contemporary event and hospitality industry.
4. Demonstrate a critical understanding of contemporary issues concerning current event and hospitality markets.

Learning and teaching methods

Learning and teaching will take the shape of lectures followed by group seminars where Wivenhoe House will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate practice. Self managed learning will supplement seminars where you will be provided with guidance on required reading and on-line learning resources.
