Module description

This module discusses some topics at the frontier of microeconomic theory and experimental economics.

Module aims

The aim of this module is:



  • To acquire the necessary tools to conduct research in microeconomic theory and experimental economics.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to:



  1. have been exposed to several topics at the research frontier of microeconomic theory and experimental economics;

  2. understand a variety of mathematical methods used in theoretical economic analysis;

  3. understand a variety of design methods used in experimental economics;

  4. be able to critically evaluate recent research contributions in economic theory and experimental economics;

  5. be ready to develop an original research agenda.

Module information

This module is for post-graduate research students in the Department of Economics.


The first part of the module will cover topics in information economics and mechanism design, while the second part of the module will cover topics in behavioural/experimental game theory.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • One 2-hour lecture per week.
  • One 1-hour class per week.

The final mark will be the average of the mark in the first part of the course and the mark in the second part of the course. The mark in the first part of the course will be based on a written referee report of a paper related to the topics of the first five lectures. The mark in the second part of the course will be based on an in-class presentation of a paper related to the topics of the last five lectures.

  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
