Over the year you will gain an understanding of the structure of a neutral, balanced body and will be introduced to various movement techniques/vocabulary. You will begin to apply this terminology to acting work.
As you begin to identify and develop physical presence of self in the space you will learn to execute simple, honest physical action and to develop an appropriate level of physical fitness to meet the challenges of the course. You will learn to select personal warm-up exercises in order to avoid personal injury and to facilitate the fullest use of physical skills in performance. You will gain an awareness of your own postural imbalances and habit body, and begin the process of redressing these habits. You will acquire the ability to select and refine gestures, images and impulses from improvisation.
The aims of this module are:
- To develop a dynamically aligned and energised body that is physically and emotionally fit enough to meet the challenges of any production or audition.
- To identify working techniques or methods of physical characterisation based on learnt vocabulary.
- To be able to move economically and expressively.
- To be able to apply movement characterisation principles to performance.
- To be able to communicate physically in performance with confidence and assurance.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate focus and professionalism: ability to maintain concentration and focus during the class. Attends and arrives for class in a timely manner with the body and mind in a state of readiness to work.
- Immerse themselves into partner work/ensemble work: works well with others – does not judge partners when working, creates a robust and productive work environment. Is able to lead and follow.
- Demonstrate alignment, dynamics and body confidence: working towards a physicality that is free of excess muscular tensions and imbalances. Centered with core stability and ease in alignment. Brave and willing to take the space with a fully-energized presence. Has confidence in the use of body and awareness of connection to the space and others.
- Demonstrate creativity: uses the body as an integral part of a creative process and is rigorous, inventive, and original in the development of an idea. Able to adapt and take on other forms and qualities of movement.
- Show inner life: connects the physical to the emotional, is able to reveal their own and or characters interior life through embodied expression.
The first term of the movement course focuses on the investigation and exploration of the body in space and self as a starting point for characterisation. The term is about opening up physically and emotionally, finding a centred, dynamically aligned and energised body, identifying and inhibiting muscular tensions and poor postural patterns. Various movement theories and techniques are introduced with the aim that the students expand their movement vocabulary in relation to self, then in relation to character.
The second term of the module is about deepening movement vocabulary and potential and expanding individual range of physical choices for characterisation in a variety of theatrical styles.
By the third term, the Movement course increasingly focuses on the practice of applying the movement techniques learnt in the studio towards performance situations and production challenges. Preparation for the profession and the investigation and exploration of artistic creativity and independence is also encouraged. You will be expected to demonstrate increased precision in your work and to have developed the foundations of a method of application of movement technique.
