Stage Management Skills 3 – will build on the learning and development of level 5 teaching. It will return students to their core subject and allow them practical application to rationalise their wider development within a Stage Management context.
Roles may involve a standard stage management approach across Assistant/ Deputy or Stage Manager roles, or ally a differing approach by introducing the roles of technical stage management or Production Stage Management. These differing approaches will further develop the students understanding of the roles within industry available to them, as well as giving further practical application at a level 6 attainment.
Additionally, students may opt for a more production management-based role to supplement level options taken, and this will be in discussion with the production staff.
The aims of this module are:
- To extend and consolidate the student’s practical skills in the areas of stage and production management.
- To increase the students management skills further.
- To provide an opportunity for students to take production roles with more responsibility.
- To further enhance the students Professionalism in the key skills areas of:
- Communication, reliability, time management.
- Team work and management of a team where appropriate.
- Initiative and self-motivation.
- Commitment and flexibility.
- Organisation.
- To create ownership of the students practical skills in the key areas of:
- Quality and finish of practical work.
- Attention to detail on practical work.
- Understanding different technology and materials.
- Management and practice in and of the work environment.
- Management and understanding of costing and budgets.
- Understanding of health and safety.
- Consolidate the students understanding of the importance of reflection and critical thinking.
- Continue to develop the students understanding of the importance of documentation & record keeping.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to demonstrate:
- Established skills, responsibility, and application of near professional level skills for stage management.
- Consistent approaches in skills delivery.
- Applied integration of research processes and analytical thinking in response to design impetus.
- Consistent health and safety working practices in a production context.
- Awareness of their industry skills in delegation, autonomous working, scheduling, and time management confidence.
- Confidence in demonstrating their professionalism in their working methodology and skills application.
Students will undertake varied production roles during this module.
Roles may include: Assistant, Deputy or, Stage Manager, Technical Stage Manager, Production Stage Manager, Assistant Production Manager, and Production Manager.
These roles will enable the student to develop their team working and managerial skills whilst learning through practice on practical productions.
This module will be delivered via:
- Small group practical classes, seminars, tutorials, independent work and supervised productions.
- Students learn through practice-based teaching on this module. Small group seminars/ individual tutorials happen at the beginning of the module to help the student reflect on their previous department experience and enable them to develop further their technical arts understanding and technical creative skills during this module.
- Regular tutorials and production-based meetings also support the teaching in this module.
