BA W496 Acting and Community Engagement
In this BA Hons Acting and Community Theatre Year 3 module students will concentrate on the application of theatre in specific social and cultural contexts: health care, work with socially-excluded groups, education, regeneration and evaluation.
Students will be encouraged to reflect on their experiences during their training and to prepare themselves for future professional and cultural challenges. A written rationale for a community theatre project will be developed, relating the project to its social and legal context, developing the language to clarify aims, objectives and outcomes
1. to reflect on training processes and professional preparation
2. to articulate the differences between theatre as propaganda, education and empowerment
3. to investigate contemporary community theatre projects with socially excluded groups
4. to evaluative the effectiveness of community theatre
Students will be able to demonstrate ability to:
1. Use research to develop understanding of theatre in a range of social and political contexts
2. Present complex ideas and arguments clearly and coherently
3. Use documentary evidence and texts to support arguments
4. Understand the processes of evaluating the effectiveness of community theatre
5. Employ effective use of a range of presentational techniques
6. Design and execute an evaluation of the workshops/performance
7. Apply creative and lateral thinking.

- Historical context and development of theatre in prisons and in health promotion
- Drama as therapy
- Inclusion, exclusion and access to theatre
- Contemporary case studies of community theatre projects with socially excluded groups, and theatre for well-being.
- Responding to Cultural and Social Policy
- The role of theatre in mobilising and clarifying opinion, action and reflection
- Theatre for Development
Term Two
- The philosophy and value of community media: radio, television and web media
- Creative industries and economic regeneration
- The role of culture in community regeneration
- Evaluating the impact of community theatre projects
- Research on evaluative approaches and practices
Term Three
- Development and execution of a project evaluation
