Module description

The work of this BA Hons Acting and Community Theatre Year 3 module begins with a series of workshops to introduce students to the ethical and practical issues of working with vulnerable groups involved with the health, social services or criminal justice system. Students are encouraged to develop a working knowledge of the processes of exclusion and inclusion, and of contemporary practice of theatre arts projects with these participants.

The module further explores the role of theatre and workshop facilitation with participants who may have a disability or poor mental health, or aresocially excluded, are at risk of offending or are in the criminal justice system. This will include:-
- The work of practitioners such as Augusto Boal.
- Case studies of contemporary theatre companies working in this sector such as Geese Theatre, Zinc, Clean Break, Graeae and Acting Out.
- Disability equality training.
- Small group work to design theatre projects for relevant groups of participants such as those with a disability, attending a pupil referral unit or in danger of offending.

Term Two
Students will have elected one of the three participant groups with whom they would like to have practical experience. In very small groups and with supervision from tutors and carers/ supervisors, students will devise a short programme of workshop facilitation which they will then implement in a relevant community setting. The workshops will have a specific outcome which may be a performance, conflict resolution, attitude shift etc. Throughout the process, students will research the participant's community context, critique their approach to workshops/ rehearsals, and appraise the outcome.

Module aims

- To consider the needs and interests of a range of non-traditional audiences and theatre participants
- To experience specialised workshop facilitation through a practice opportunity in the community
- To develop a ‘toolkit’ of techniques to encourage participation and facilitation in theatre-making
- To develop leadership skills in working with challenging groups.

Module learning outcomes

- Assess the needs of participants and adapt their work accordingly
- Create suitable long term plans in addition to workshops planning
- Consider issues of learning, mental health and physical disability
- Adapt work to suit language, culture and abilities of participants
- Design and deliver a series of workshops in an appropriately challenging setting
- Apply knowledge of performance skills (voice, movement, music) and technical skills (production and media)
- Evaluate the series of workshops

Module information

- Continuous internal and/or external tutor assessment of contribution to the workshop process and outcome –weighted 60% of thefinal module mark.
- Portfolio including research on material relevant to participants and arts based companies, overview plan, workshop plans, critique of plans, seminar notes –weighted 40% of thefinal module mark
