Module description

This module provides practical experience of project management, producing and event design. Students will work in pairs or as part of a group to produce a small arts festival or series of events as agreed with the module convenor.

Students will have to demonstrate an ability to secure a venue, programme an event, produce a marketing outline and manage a final project. Indicative projects could take the form of a live event, a series of events, a festival of filmed work, or a digital festival that happens in cyberspace.

Students may take on different aspects of the producing role within the same project, or across a number of projects, throughout the module. Additionally, students will undertake the role of a producer (either as an individual or in pairs) working on either a film or theatre collaboration with another course; the specifics of the project to which the producing student is seconded will be determined by the tutor/Head of Course.

The aims of this module are:



  • To develop enterprise and entrepreneurial skills

  • To understand and respond to audience expectations and needs

  • To apply a range of skills developed on the course to a single project

  • To improve employability by make further professional contacts in the industry

  • To develop modes of communication for managing a small team

  • To understand a range of creative thinking approaches and methodologies to generate ideas for events and festivals

  • To gain experience in the role of theatre and/or film producer working alongside a full creative team in support of a project.

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the dynamic nature of the event and festival industry

  2. Demonstrate the ability to organise, deliver and evaluate the impact of an arts festival or other public arts events

  3. Demonstrate the ability to identify, deliver and evaluate appropriate technologies to support a specific event

  4. Demonstrate the ability to work as a leader and a member of a small team

  5. Demonstrate understanding the role of a theatre and/or film producer in working towards the success of a team project under the creative direction of another
