Module description

In this student-led module, students will work independently or as part of a team to set up a new theatre company. This will involve defining the structure and roles within the company, writing the manifesto, aims, and long-term goals, submitting the legal and financial paperwork, producing a marketing campaign, and programming a season of shows at venues of their choice.

Module aims

- To demonstrate high-level, the practical skills developed across the first two years of study
- To provide students with the experience of aligning their artistic concepts to practical necessities and current industry practices.
- To further the students understanding of the legal and financial issues in setting up a registered company
- To encourage students to produce professional level output which can be used to increase employability prospects

Module learning outcomes

- Ability to plan activities and plan the management of a small team
- Practical understanding of the processes and conventions for creating a theatre company
- Ability to source and utilise research materials in relation to a creative project
- Further develop skills towards the creative application of the knowledge acquired in first two years of study
- The ability to present their creative and administrative work in an industry-appropriate format

Module information

The assessment for this module will be in a portfolio, outlining the following information regarding the company set-up:
- Overall company structure
- Outline of roles in the company
- A manifesto
- Branding and an active website
- Budget and Fundraising Proposals
- 2 year, 5 year and 10 year plans
- Examples of the appropriate legal and financial paperwork,
- A marketing campaign for the launch of the company
- Details and plan for a Launch Event
- Target Audience Breakdown and Research
- A marketing campaign for the first season
- Programme for a season of shows, with rationale and explanation
- Sample Funding Application

The material (which is non-exclusive) can either be included in the Portfolio or accessed through a hyperlink, provided in the
electronic submission of the portfolio (100%).

Learning and teaching methods

- The teaching will take place through tutorials and feedback on written and electronic documents. - The student(s) should meet with their project supervisor once a fortnight for at least 1 hour.
