Module description

In this student-led module, students will work towards creating a touring schedule and plan for either a single show or a series of productions. They will focus on the preparation for and the execution of a tour.

In preparing for a tour, the student will have to research and choose appropriate venues, prepare a technical rider and touring pack, design a marketing campaign for each location, and present a budget for expenditure against possible profit. They will also have to plan all the logistics of the tour itself, including travel, insurance, accommodation, contracts, show report templates, risk assessments, get-in and get-out, any rehearsal time arrangements, and all other on-site management issues. Finally, the tour plan should include a plan for a potential overseas tour, which should include a schedule, budget and any VISA regulations.

Module aims

1. To demonstrate high-level knowledge of the theatre industry
2. To demonstrate the ability to plan for a small company over an extended period of time
3. To apply the skills developed in Years 1 and 2 to a practical project, reflecting industry practice and standards.
4. To further the students understanding of the administrative, legal and financial issues connected to touring a theatrical production
5. To encourage students to produce professional level output which can be used to increase employability prospects.

Module learning outcomes

1. Ability to plan activities and plan the management of a small team Practical understanding of the processes and conventions for arranging a tour for a production
2. Ability to apply research to a range of communities and venues
3. Further develop skills towards the practical application of the knowledge acquired in first two years of study.
4. The ability to think laterally and plan for multiple eventualities

Module information

The assessment for this module will be delivered in two portfolios. Portfolio One will be focus on the matters that need to be
in place BEFORE the tour begins. It will include:-
- venue List, with justification and sample contracts
- a technical rider
- touring pack
- a plan for marketing campaign for each location
- a budget for expenditure against possible profit at each location
- relevant risk assessments
- details of appropriate insurance

The second will deal with the matter and process of the tour IN PROGRESS, with specific reference to the chosen venues.
Among the details to be included are,
- travel arrangements (actors / set / stage manager or technician)
- accommodation arrangements for whole of tour
- consideration of per diems and fees
- show report templates
- risk assessments for venues
- get-in and get-out (venue specific)
- rehearsal arrangements, if necessary

- Portfolio 1: 3000 words (60%)
- Portfolio 2: 2500 words (40%)

Learning and teaching methods

The teaching will take place through tutorials and feedback on written and electronic documents. The student(s) should meet with their project supervisor once a fortnight for at least 1 hour.
