BA W451 Stage Management

Module description

Students will build on their learning at level 4 across stage management, undertaking a variety of production roles during this module.


Roles may include Assistant Stage Manager, Deputy Stage Manager, Assistant Production Manager. These roles will enable the student to develop their team working and managerial skills whilst learning through practice on practical productions.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To introduce the student to the processes within and around a rehearsal room.

  • To develop the students working practices in a self managed approach.

  • To develop the students’ skills in the focus area of Stage Management.

  • To develop the students’ knowledge of the collaborative production process in a professional environment.

  • To employ the students’ professionalism in the key skills areas of:

    • Communication, reliability, time management.

    • Team work.

    • Initiative and self-motivation.

    • Commitment and flexibility.

    • Organisation.



  • Further developing the students practical skills in the key areas of:

    • Quality and finish of practical work.

    • Attention to detail on practical work.

    • Management and organisation of the student work environment.

    • Management and understanding of budgets.

    • Understanding of health and safety.



Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Understand the production process from beginning to completion.

  2. Apply Stage Management skills and theory in professional practice, utilising transferable skills learnt across level 5.

  3. Apply research and analytical thinking in a production context.

  4. Articulate appropriate professional terminology in a production context.

  5. Demonstrate a collaborative methodology in a production context.

Module information

Syllabus information


Students will undertake varied production roles during this module, learning and honing the skills required for specific areas in the theatrical process. They will explore the production process of creating a show and the specific responsibilities of specific roles in the process. Roles may include:



  • Assistant Stage Manager

  • Deputy Stage Manager

  • Assistant Production Manager


The teaching and learning will involve areas such as:



  • Quality & finish of practical work.

  • Attention to detail on practical work.

  • Management & organisation of the student work environment.

  • Management & understanding of budgets.

  • Understanding of Health & Safety.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • Small group practical classes, seminars, tutorials, independent work and supervised productions.
  • Students learn through practice-based teaching on this module. Small group seminars/ individual tutorials happen at the beginning of the module to help the student reflect on their previous modules and enable them to develop further their production understanding and production skills during this module.
  • Regular tutorials and production-based meetings also support the teaching in this module.
