BA W496 Acting and Community Engagement
In this second year module for Acting and Community Theatre, students will examine introductory skills and practices of community theatre arts management. Students will explore the structure and management of small scale community and voluntary sector arts organisations, and education and outreach departments within large organisations.
The module includes preparation for work placements assessed in final year. By the end of the module students will be prepared to learn and begin to apply arts administration skills in a professional company context.
Aspects of event management and production management will be explored. This may include such aspects as marketing, budgets, databases, liaison with agencies, licensing, risk assessment, audience management and other aspects of health and safety, along with scheduling and logistics.
The aims of the module are:
1. To introduce students to management of the voluntary and community arts sectors
2. To explore a range of arts organisational roles and processes
3. To reflect on the role of organisations in community theatre provision
4. To develop an understanding of the management of arts organisations in preparation for placement with a company
5. To explore health & safety issues of public performance.
6. To appreciate the legal and technical requirements of performance in a range of settings
7. To experience the process of production management and associated roles
8. To experience production and event management through the development and delivery of an event.
9. Work effectively as members of a production team
10. Carry out established risk assessment procedures
By the end of the module students will be able to demonstrate ability to:
1. Understand the processes of a range of arts organisations
2. Understand the roles and responsibilities in production management
3. Critically analyses arts organisations' business and marketing practices
4. Exercise relevant practical and administrative skills
