BA W496 Acting and Community Theatre
In this second year module for Acting and Community Theatre the students will begin to develop relationships with local organisations and to explore the different influences and contexts that form the cultural landscape of communities.
The module involves applying acting skills developed in the first year to performance projects devised from participants' experiences. Students will consult with participants in their local communities in the Southend region.. They will gain experience of working with and for a range of people from 4 years to 90 years, to develop and present community theatre performances and workshops.
Projects will draw on observation and narrative, exploring and referring to local stories, issues and identities. Performances will take place in a range of environments such as on campus, in studios, at youth centres, schools, in shelteredhousing, or outdoors.
Forum theatre techniques are the most prevalent method of community consultation through interactive performance. Students will learn the form, practice performance elements and acting techniques and apply these to TIE and workshops.
This project offers students an opportunity to write and devise for theatre, in consultation with a group of school-aged children, to develop a play for a short tour of schools.

In this projectstudents will develop their skills in facilitating drama based workshops with a group in the community. They will gain knowledge of facilitation techniques, an understanding of group process and will apply this to engage participants.

This project in the module is designed to introduce students to the techniques of reminiscence with older people. This further develops verbatim acting skills learned in year one.

This interactive performance technique introduces students to improvised performance. Students will learn the form, practice performance elements and apply acting techniques to studio performance
The module may be delivered on a cyclic basis so that student groups may undertake units at different times
To consolidate students’ use of consultative research to support performance and workshop based elements of theatre.
To provide opportunities for students to extend their training in acting through applying techniques and methodology to creation of interactive community theatre.
To introduce students to a range of performance forms and styles relevant to community theatre.
Students will be able to demonstrate ability to:
- Engage with the community, demonstrating knowledge of the audience, use of suitable communication strategies and choice of material
- Develop a working relationship with participants
- Work with discipline, commitment, spontaneity and preparation
- Apply creative inventiveness to devising and performance and workshops
- Apply consultative primary and secondary research to performance and workshops
- understand the processes of ensemble acting and group dynamics

- apply voice, movement, acting and music skills in performance and workshops
