Module description

This module constitutes a range of influences that have evolved from European physical theatre. Students will continue to develop performance skills through the practice of acting, devising, writing, movement, voice and singing. Student will have the opportunity to experiment with the theatrical clown, non-traditional text structure, mask and puppetry. The concept of 'actor-led work' is developed further.

Students are assessed on their contribution and participation during the rehearsal process and performance of the project. A full length staging of a devised physical comedy will be presented to an audience of students and staff.

Module aims

To encourage students to:
- Experiment with different approaches to performance
- Work in styles which are non-naturalistic yet linear
- Work in styles which are larger than life
- Begin to find and develop a personal artistic vision
- Further develop performance and ensemble skills
- Learn how to work independently and as a group
- Adopt safe production practices

Module learning outcomes

- Textual comprehension (understanding and interpreting language, plot and characters) specifically of expressionism in text, unconventionally-structured texts.
- Skills integration (ability to utilize all disciplines within the context of the play/project) focusing on specific and highly stylised performance forms
- Commitment in preparation and performance of devised and actor-lead work
- Ensemble acting (generous participation in and contribution to all stages of work and an awareness of the relationship between them) as required.
- Flexibility and sensitivity to change (ability to share, initiate and accept ideas and directions)
- Objective self-assessment (as an actor and within the project)
- Creativity (inventive responses to demands and opportunities)
- Achievement of the aims of the projects
- Professional potential (creative realisation, discipline, extending range, application, focus, presence and personal confidence)

Learning and teaching methods

- Students work in small group practical classes - Learning also takes place in presentations, workshops and supervised and unsupervised rehearsals and studio-based performances - Independent study and research - Oral formative assessment and tutor feedback is given in a group session.
