Module description

This module will allow you to build and deepen the methodology of movement techniques studied in Year One. The study of "self" in Year One enables Year Two students to be more expansive in their physical choices. The module encourages you to be more specific and refined whilst developing an increased physical awareness and expressive potential.

You will learn to expand your range of physical choices in various theatrical styles. The content of the course focuses on the self within the ensemble and for the transformation of character. You will gain an understanding of the ways in which inner psychological and emotional impulses can be outwardly concealed or revealed. Study of character movement and transformative techniques continues alongside the study of the body's structure and the interactive relationship of mind, body and space.

Module aims

The aim of this module is:

  • To encourage students to develop the ability to:

    • Define self-reliance as the underlying strength of individual and ensemble work

    • Communicate an expressive body with the appropriate level of physical and emotional fitness and creativity

    • Present a clear demonstration of the role of movement in character transformation

    • Use a regular physical warm-up.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate advanced awareness of and ability to put into practice :

    • Class Etiquette: Attends and arrives for class in a timely manner with the body and mind in a state of readiness to work. (This includes the dress code.)

    • Ensemble: Works well with peers by contributing both physical and creative ideas to group work and discussions. In collaboration can lead and follow.

    • Alignment: Working towards a physicality that is free of excess muscular tensions and imbalances. Centred with core stability and ease in alignment.

    • Dynamics: Able to adapt and take on other forms and qualities of movement, styles, rhythms, efforts, use of space, etc. Shows variety in personal qualitative range.

    • Body Confidence: Brave and willing to take the space with a full-energized presence. Has confidence in the use of one's own body.

    • Creativity: Uses the body as an extension of one’s imagination and is rigorous, inventive, and original in the development of an idea.

    • Inner Life: Connects the physical to the emotional, can reveal their own and or character's interior life through body language.

    • Physical Memory: Able to repeat both choreography, set physical actions, and mentally scored sequences with both precession and connection.

    • Self-Assessment: Understands where personal growth is needed, and demonstrates a willingness to take risks in class to overcome personal blocks.

    • Integration of Skills: Takes personal ownership of their work, and demonstrates the ability to integrate movement/physicality into assessments, acting, and performance. The student has developed their own intelligent movement-based process that enables them to create what is physically required by any director, choreographer, and in any given creative process.

    • Learning Outcomes are condensed within Report Forms.

Module information

The module is designed to develop appropriate levels of physical, emotional and imaginative fitness. Alignment work is re-emphasised and applied to both acting challenges and movement improvisations. By the end of the module, students will have committed the practice of a personal warm-up to body memory and identified a working technique for physical characterisation. Laban method is used practically and verbally throughout Year Two.

The course content is studied throughout the year and applied to a range of theatrical and movement styles e.g. acrobatics, commedia dell'arte, music hall. Students will consolidate their knowledge and understanding of the course content into the presentation and performance of projects. The main focus of the module is on the student's ability to communicate physically in performance.

Learning and teaching methods

  • Students receive verbal and/or written formative assessment from tutors
  • Learning also takes place through presentations within the class environment
  • Students are expected to work on movement techniques and development in independent study and practice
  • Panel feedback interviews at the end of Terms One and Three
  • Students receive verbal and written formative assessment from tutors
