Module description

This is a compulsory second year course for students on the BA Hons Acting programme. The module examines how changes in society are reflected in theatre.

Module aims

To encourage students to:
- develop the ability to present, discuss and defend ideas in seminar and written contexts
- consider how theatres reflect their own era
- gain an understanding of the relevance of commedia and other theatres to contemporary practice

Module learning outcomes

- Clear grasp of subject matter set
- Evidence of research to support arguments/ideas
- Use of appropriate language in written work and presentations
- Ability to structure ideas coherently
- Personal progression (extending range, willing to take risks)
- Ability to understand theories and apply to practice-based projects

Learning and teaching methods

- Normally 2 hours of Contextual Studies lectures, seminars or tutorials per week except during acting priority weeks - Students are expected to use independent study for research, class preparation and for producing/preparing assignments. - Learning will be supported by appropriate screenings. - Formative feedback and tutor comments on essay and presentation evaluation reports
