Module description

Some examples of content covered throughout this module are:
- Application of technical skills to solo reperoire
- sustaining character through accent, sound, musicality and lyrics,
- maintaining technique whilst performing sung material
- sourcing suitable vocal material
- Brecht songs in context and in performance

Module aims

The aims of this module are:

  • To develop responsibility for independent singing practice.

  • To accumulate a more varied, complex and demanding repertoire.

  • To develop greater understanding of relevant musical styles of periods in which acting projects are set.

  • To develop the ability to interpret and communicate musical material to an audience.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate advanced ability in technical music/singing techniques, such as breathing (correct use of techniques), rhythm (feeling the pulse of the music), resonance and placement (intonation, free and unrestricted tone), physicality (posture, alignment, release), articulation (energized text, use of vowels and consonants).

  2. Display advanced ability in performance of sung material such as, duet singing, solo singing (demonstration of journey through song/connection), ensemble singing, application of technical skills to support character through song, development (ownership of voice, working through inhibition).

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • Work with music and singing tutors in group practical classes
  • Normally 4 hours of music/singing classes per week except during acting priority weeks
  • Learning also takes place in one-to-one tutorials.
  • Students will be expected to practice music and singing in independent study
  • Verbal and written formative assessment and feedback

  • Duets
  • Ensemble Songs

Exam format definitions

  • Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
  • In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
