BA W451 Stage Management

Module description

Students will undertake further practical production roles during this module across the degree scope.


Roles may include but are not limited to (Assistant Stage Manager, Deputy Stage Manager, Stage Manager, Assistant Production Manager, Technical department assistants).


These roles will enable the student to develop their team-working and managerial skills whilst learning through practice on practical productions and broadening their understanding of the interrelationships between departments outside of pathway choices.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • Enhance the students skills in stage/production or technical management.

  • Enhance the students management skills.

  • Enhance the students’ knowledge of the collaborative production process in a professional environment.

  • Further the students professionalism in the key skills areas of:

    • Communication, reliability, time management

    • Team work

    • Initiative and self-motivation

    • Commitment and flexibility

    • Organisation



  • Further the students practical skills in the key areas of:

    • Quality and finish of practical work

    • Attention to detail on practical work

    • Management and organisation of the student work environment

    • Management and understanding of budgets

    • Understanding of health and safety



  • Progress the students understanding of the importance of reflection and critical thinking


Progress the students understanding of the importance of documentation & record keeping

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate development of the core skills application for production working.

  2. Understand the production/project process from beginning to completion.

  3. Research and utilise analytical thinking in response to design considerations.

  4. Utilise health and safety to deliver production work.

  5. Demonstrate development of professional communication and organisation.

Students will undertake further practical production roles during this module. Roles may include:



  • Assistant Stage Manager,

  • Deputy Stage Manager,

  • Stage Manager,

  • Assistant Production Manager,

  • Technical Department assistants


Students learn through practice-based teaching on this module.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

Small group practical classes, seminars, tutorials, independent work and supervised productions.

Students learn through practice-based teaching on this module. Small group seminars/ individual tutorials happen at the beginning of the module to help the student reflect on their previous modules and enable them to develop further their production understanding and production skills during this module.

Regular tutorials and production-based meetings also support the teaching in this module.
