BA W494 Acting and Physical Theatre

Module description

This first year module for the BA Acting & Physical Theatre contains an exploration of a variety styles of mask work and explores the creation of solo and/ or ensemble performances. The module is practical and through the work on mask, students are encouraged to look more closely at the physical representation of their bodies in performance. During the course of the module students will explore Neutral Mask and other styles of Western mask work. They will also be introduced to expressive character and Body Masks – which serves their development as physical artists as well enhancing their employability skills.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To introduce the students to neutral and character.

  • To create solo and/ or ensemble mask performance.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Perform using basic mask work.

  2. Work with a high degree of creativity, confidence and trust in rehearsal.

  3. Demonstrate an ability to reflect on responses to different styles of mask work.

  4. Shape a mask performance arising from character and situation.
