Module Directory

This module will focus on developing your knowledge of and skills in applying techniques for working on camera for mediums such as feature film, television, commercials and corporate film. It will also develop your understanding of basic filmmaking techniques and will require you to learn how to operate a digital video camera, sound equipment and editing software at a basic level. You will develop an awareness of and sensitivity to the film/television set or location, who's who on the crew and will develop a practical awareness of on-set protocols and practices.

You will explore the implications of performance size in relation to shot size, continuity, product placement, camera movement, set/location constraints and challenges, shooting out of sequence, emotional requirements of the scene and other obstacles to effective performance and will develop skills and techniques to support the development of a believable character on camera. Auditions, castings and self-taping remotely will also be covered in this module.

Working with your tutor(s) and with each other you will perform monologues, duologues and multi-performer scenes on camera, supporting each other as crew and under similar conditions as those in the industry. Assessment in this module will be continuous. Upon completion of this module, you will have showreel footage, including at least one dramatic/comedic scene and one commercial advert.

Alongside the skills covered in this unit, your technical skills in this area will be developed in the industry preparation sessions.

The aims of this module are:

• To introduce students to the film set/location and process and the challenges and opportunities which it offers to a performer


• To develop students’ awareness of their presence on camera and how to utilize this to create believable and intriguing characters


• To develop students’ technical skills for performing on camera (hitting marks, entering/exiting shots, performance size, continuity, eyelines, etc.)


• To develop understanding of related vocabulary


• To introduce students to working with and analysing screenplays and commercial copy


• To establish an informed working relationship with directors, writers, crew and technicians


• To introduce students to basic filmmaking concepts and techniques


• To introduce students to the operation of a digital video camera, sound recording equipment and video editing software


• To develop individual showreel material for use in post-training employment

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:

1. Prepare for performance roles for film, television and commercials.


2. Comfortably create and adapt a performance for use in film, television or commercials.


3. Communicate with other talent, directors, writers, crew and technicians in appropriate vocabulary.


4. Demonstrate awareness of appropriate on-set protocols and practices.


5. Take direction and apply this to your performances on camera.


6. Understanding of the operation of camera, sound and editing equipment to a basic level.

This module is a year-long module, delivered in blocks of workshops with in-house tutors and work professionals in the industry. Most of the learning will be through practical experience either on location or in studio space, though there will be tasks and preparation that students will need to work on outside the space.

1. Introduction to Technology


2. Introduction to the demands of working on set/location


3. Incorporation and development of physical and vocal techniques required for performing on camera


4. Preparing for a role on camera


5. Creating a character


6. Applying technical skills to performing on camera (hitting marks, eyelines, entering/exiting shots, traveling with the camera, continuity, performance size, etc.)


7. Applying feedback from a director to on camera performance


8. Working with screenplays and commercial copy


9. Basic filmmaking understanding (camera, sound, editing)

This module will be delivered via:

• Individual Research and Rehearsal
• Practical Classes and workshops
• Occasional Seminars

Practical classes will be appropriate for students with learning and/or physical disabilities, and delivery (exercises and performances) can be altered to ensure inclusivity. Access to the workshop place is accessible, by being either on the ground floor or via a lift. Any location work will be arranged to allow inclusive practice. Reading material and scripts can be provided in advance. Continual Assessment tasks do not require an exam and allow for learners to demonstrate learning through active participation.
