BA W412 Acting and Fight Performance

Module description

This year-long unit will support the other physical skills developed on the course.
The overall aim of the unit is to provide you with the capabilities of performing advanced physical routines. This will directly apply to unarmed stage combat and will also relate to armed combat and personal development. You will focus on developing your ability to move in space and on using these skills in the development of specific characters.

Module aims

Gymnastics/Acrobatics/Tumbling
To develop:
1. a vocabulary and repertoire of gymnastic movement
2. timing, balance, co-ordination, strength and suppleness
3. ability to apply skills to performance
4. an understanding of safe practice and relevant procedures

Martial Arts
1. Develop body control and overall discipline when working in a physical manner
2. Provide a working knowledge of the philosophy of martial arts training
3. Develop co-ordination, strength and suppleness
4. Understand how martial skills can translate into safe and effective performance
5. Develop understanding of how fighting techniques are applied in an actual, fighting situation

Movement
1. To improve basic posture
2. To develop objective, self-awareness and strengthen the internal monitor
3. To see link between movement and dramatic intention
4. To increase awareness of habitual movement patterns
5. To assist in freeing the body for vocal work and characterisation
6. To develop understanding of the connection between actions, emotions and desires.

Module learning outcomes

Gymnastics/Acrobatics/Tumbling
1. Ability to combine individual techniques for performance
2. Performance of gymnastic routines
3. Ability to work as an individual or as part of a team
4. Understanding of spatial awareness in a performance space
5. Understanding of the safety practices required for the execution of gymnastic/acrobatic routines
6. Artistic creativity and interpretation to gymnastic routines

Martial Arts
By the end of this unit you will be able to demonstrate:
1. Strong proficiency in a Martial Art
2. Proficient use of both the right and left sides of the body
3. Understanding of a range of different fighting responses
4. Ability to apply knowledge in practical sessions
5. Ability to translate martial skills into safe stage combat

Movement
1. Improved awareness of habitual movement patterns
2. Increased flexibility and range of movement
3. Ability to link movement to performance
4. Objective self-awareness of physical patterns
