BA W496 Acting and Community Theatre
This first year acting module provides opportunities for students to apply the introductory learning of EA111 Introduction to Acting Theory, Method & Practice to more demanding textual and acting challenges. You will continue to advance your actor training through a focussed approach to the theatre of a particular period.
The work of this module will progress into second year when it will inform and support the devising of text.
1. Introduction to sustaining connection & relationships in the communication of complex ideas through structured text.
2. Being more at ease in integrating Received Pronunciation.
3. Introduction to making use of both director and voice coach to aid performance.
Students will learn how to:
- Achieve extreme emotion whilst remaining truthful
- Develop and sustain a believable character
- Research widely and effectively
- Understand and accurately interpret language, plot and style
- Sustain improvisation with discipline, spontaneity and creative imagination
- Create character and relationships in complex styles and situations.
You will work in small groups, each of whom will study a play text. Work begins with read-throughs during which research topics are assigned. 'Uniting' (breaking into units) of the play is undertaken in class lead by the tutor, following which character work is identified and roles assigned.
Students will be cast in short scenes demanding they meet the challenging and emotional demands of complex language and heightened passions. These scenes are rehearsed and shown to peers.
To provide students with opportunities to:
- work on texts in heightened language that demands bold choices in character, and depth and breadth of emotional response
- relate form and style with the content of a play
- apply detailed and accurate research methods.
By the end of this module you will be able to demonstrate:

- Research Skills: e.g. character choices, accurate period identification
- Creative Repetition: concentration, synthesis of technique, individuality, appropriate connection, consistency.

- Learning also takes place in workshops, supervised and unsupervised rehearsals and performances.
- Key improvisation exercises are set throughout the course with feedback from tutors and peers
- At the end of the module students will show scenes to staff and peers. Formative feedback is given by the tutor.
