Module description

This full year module is one of the four skills modules for the CertHE Theatre Arts course. In Terms One and Two, you will begin with an assessment of vocal range and an introduction to singing techniques and group songs.

You will also begin to identify personal needs in terms of performance preparation and audition requirements by selecting and working on a solo song to audition standard In addition, you will be doing ensemble singing work to support current acting projects. The work of the final term is working on improving technique, confidence and integrating acting skills in preparation for singing in a performance setting.

Module aims

To provide students with the ability to:
1. Understand and use the processes of warming up the voice for singing
2. Use the voice to create sounds, chant and music/song as part of an ensemble
3. Present at least one solo song to audition standard

Module learning outcomes

Students will be able to demonstrate achievement in:
Technical
1. Breathing (correct use of techniques)
2. Rhythm (feeling the pulse of the music)
3. Resonance and placement (intonation, free and unconstricted tone)
4. Physicality (posture, alignment, release)
5. Articulation (energized text, use of vowels and consonants)

2. Solo song (integrating acting skills with vocal technique)

Term One
1. Introduction to warm-up techniques for singing
2. Exploration of personal vocal range and potential
3. Basic singing techniques
4. Rudiments of musical discipline
5. Disciplines of Ensemble singing and performance
6. Linking singing with acting, voice and movement
7. Selecting a solo song for audition and receiving performance coaching on that song

Term Two
1. Continued sourcing and preparation of songs for auditions
2. Techniques for breath support, relaxation, resonance and energy
3. Sustaining and presenting a song
4. Initial preparation and rehearsals for group performance in term three

Term Three
1. Consolidation of vocal range
2. Integration of acting techniques and character into singing
3. Improving confidence in the singing voice for solo song performance
4. Ability to source appropriate audition songs
5. Integrating solo and ensemble singing into small and large group performances and shows

Learning and teaching methods

- Students work with music and singing tutors in group practical classes - Normally 1.5 to 2 hours of music/singing classes per week except during acting priority weeks - Students will be expected to practice music and singing in independent study - Verbal formative assessment and feedback at the end of each term in group session - Students receive a written report with summative assessment and tutors' comments at the end of the module
