Module description

This full year module is one of the four skills modules for the CertHE Theatre Arts course. The work begins in Term One with an assessment of vocal range, introduction to singing techniques and group songs. In Term Two you will begin to identify personal needs in terms of performance preparation and audition requirements. You will select and work on solo songs and work on improving approaches to singing. You will also work on achieving audition standard in two contrasting songs. The work of the final term is on integration of character into singing, increasing confidence in solo work and extending students' personal repertoires.

Module aims

To provide students with the ability to:
- Understand and use the processes of warming up the voice for singing
- Use the voice to create sounds, chant and music/song as part of an ensemble
- Present at least two contrasting solo songs to audition standard

Module learning outcomes

Students will be able to demonstrate achievement in:
Technical
- Breathing (correct use of techniques)
- Rhythm (feeling the pulse of the music)
- Resonance and placement (intonation, free and unconstricted tone)
- Physicality (posture, alignment, release)
- Articulation (energized text, use of vowels and consonants)

Term One
- Introduction to warm-up techniques for singing
- Exploration of personal vocal range and potential
- Basic singing techniques
- Rudiments of musical discipline
- Disciplines of Ensemble singing
- Linking singing with acting, voice and movement

Term Two
- Identification of strengths and weaknesses
- Sourcing and preparing songs for auditions
- Techniques for breath support, relaxation, resonance and energy
- Sustaining and presenting a song

Term Three
- Extending repertoire and choice of songs
- Consolidation of vocal range
- Integration of acting techniques and character into singing
- Improving confidence in the singing voice
- Relevant sources for audition songs

Learning and teaching methods

- Students work with music and singing tutors in group practical classes - Normally 1½ - 2 hours of music/singing classes per week except during acting priority weeks - Students will be expected to practice music and singing in independent study - Verbal formative assessment and feedback at the end of each term in group session - Students receive a written report with summative assessment and tutors' comments at the end of the module
