Module description

This full year module is one of the four skills modules in the CertHE Theatre Arts course. The work begins in Term One with an introduction to the anatomy of voice production.

Module aims

To provide students with the ability to:
- Use the vocal instrument in a wide and varied way without damage
- Develop the voice in the future
- Use the voice expressively in direct and effective communication
- Amend articulatory problems
- Change vocal technique to serve a range of needs eg character, text, setting

Module learning outcomes

Students will be able to demonstrate:
1. Physical Awareness and Breath - Awareness and use of physical release, flexibility and alignment, and free and flexible breathing system
2. Breathing and Voice - Ability to identify and use a centred impulse and abdominal support for breath and sound, together with a free throat
3. Range - Flexible and responsive use of resonators and pitch range in connection to emotional ownership of the text
4. Articulation - Development of oral sensitivity to sound, together with muscularity, flexibility and resonance in articulation
5. Ability to Engage with Text/ Progress (Sensitivity and willingness to change).

Term One
- Introduction to the workings of the voice
- Anatomical structures that support the voice
- Linking voice, body and the emotions
- Exploration of vocal potential through exercises
- Training the ear and exploring the vocal instrument
- Understanding one’s own voice and those of others
- Linking voice with acting, singing and movement
- Articulatory problems and how to deal with them

Term Two
- Development of strength, flexibility and clarity in the whole vocal system
- Breath, range and articulation
- How to warm up the voice
- The process of vocal transformation to portray characters unlike oneself
- Approaches to a range of texts including poetry and heightened language
- Identification of own personal vocal weaknesses and potential.

Term Three
- Discovering vocal demands of different characters: age, sex, social and educational standing, accent
- Developing strength, flexibility and clarity in the whole vocal system
- Exercises to increase flexibility, placement, rhythm and musicality
- Integration of voice work with acting, movement and singing
- Varying pitch, speed, rhythm etc. whilst maintaining body and emotion links.

Learning and teaching methods

Students work with voice tutors in group practical classes Normally 2 hours of voice classes per week except during acting priority weeks

The assessment criteria for this module are the extent to which students can demonstrate understanding of the module Learning Outcomes. Students are expected to show evidence of consistent work in class and to execute periodically set exercises to an appropriate standard.
