This acting module takes place during the first term of the course. The module aims to encourage students to explore imaginatively various means of communication. It teaches students the roots of theatre and its functions of story-telling and celebration. The work of this first term module is designed to further your understanding of yourself by stretching your emotional, physical and vocal range and to encourage spontaneity through improvisation.
The module culminates in an assessed studio-based showing to a small invited audience of staff and students at the end of term.
- To provide students with an introduction to:
- The ground rules of the art of performance
- Performance and textual analysis
- Understanding character
- The importance of the ensemble and the creation of the safe space
- Students will be able to demonstrate:
- Professional potential: Discipline, extending range, focus, presence and personal contribution
- Commitment, energy and positive attitude
- Creative inventiveness
- Flexibility and sensitivity to change
- Ensemble acting: adaptability, generous participation in all stages of work, awareness of relationships
- An awareness of own strengths and weaknesses as an actor and within a project, and ability to accept criticism and act upon it
- Textual comprehension and use of actors research: Understanding and interpreting language and plot
- Performance skills and skills integration
Module Content
1. Narrative: You will learn to communicate directly and effectively with an audience.
2. Freeing the imagination: You will learn how to communicate imaginatively and freely using the actor's instrument.
3. Introduction to acting from a basis of truth and what it means to be human.
4. Introduction to ensemble work: Through group work, students will begin to participate effectively as part of an ensemble.

- Learning also takes place in practical presentations/demonstrations, workshops and supervised rehearsals
- Continuous verbal tutor feedback is integral to class work
- Students receive written summative assessment and tutor feedback at the end of the module
- Additional learning is encouraged through improvisation, group discussion and tutor-guided independent study

- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
