Module description

This module gives a high-level view of the design process of mechatronics systems. It provides students with background knowledge on mechatronics and discusses applications and types of such systems. The module introduces and builds upon previous knowledge of relevant main components, such as sensors and actuators, and their operational characteristics. The students also get exposed to aspects of mechatronic design, such as dividing a system to subsystems, mechanical design through specialised software, control design, and designing against failure.

Module aims

• Demonstrate awareness of critical components of mechatronics systems
• Develop analytical and problem solving skills for mechatronic systems' design
• Utilize a systems approach to complex problems
• Apply and transfer interdisciplinary systems engineering approaches to the field of mechatronics engineering

Module learning outcomes

After completing this module, students will be expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate through examples the understanding of mechatronics systems and their components
2. Analyse the functions of structures such as robots and their embedded systems
3. Evaluate and compare methods of engineering design in mechatronics
4. Apply appropriate procedures to design projects that include various considerations

Exam format definitions

  • Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
  • In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.

Your department will provide further guidance before your exams.
