Module description

This is a full year module available only to those students on degree courses which include the placement year. Students will undertake their placement at a host organisation. The student will be responsible for securing the placement with the assistance of the School and the Employability & Careers Centre.

Module aims

The aim of the module is to give the student the opportunity to put their academic learning outcomes into a work context and to add work related learning outcomes to their portfolio.

The syllabus will be developed around the learning outcomes for each student and will be recorded on the training agreement signed by the student, the host organisation, and the University.

The learning and teaching methods will be dependent on the placement and will be recorded for an individual student on the training agreement signed by the placement provider, the student, and the University.

Additional coursework information

The assessment of the placement year is through a single assessment comprises three components. An assessment of the student's performance in securing the placement, an assessment of the students performance during the placement, and an assessment of the students reflection on the placement. The first component will be assessed by the School Placement Officer. The second component comprises an assessment by the placement tutor in the form of a report on the students performance. The third component will be a reflective statement written by the student and based on a logbook maintained throughout the placement. This third component will be assessed by the students academic tutor. All three components are assessed as pass/fail. A pass grade in all three components leads to the award of 120 credits.

Exam format definitions

  • Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
  • In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
