Module description

In this module you are given the opportunity to either: (i) explore satellite remote-sensing data such as from NASA & Giovanni Earth science database to produce appropriate datasets that can be analysed and visualised for various audiences; or (ii) identify an appropriate industry that you can volunteer for and obtain vocational experience and training.

Module aims

The aim of this module is:



  • To equip you with an array of key skills in data analysis and visualisation and/or vocational experience working for an industry associated with marine resources.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Data analysis: Analyse and visualise complex datasets.

  2. Placement: Show competence in approaching a range of industries, NGOs, Government agencies, research organisations to obtain a placement (written and/or oral experience related to selling yourself and your key skills).

  3. Placement: Gain work-based learning experience and key skills in a 2-week voluntary work placement (skills will vary greatly depending on specific placement).

  4. Show competence in preparation of and dissemination of an outward facing report.

  5. Give appropriate oral presentations to a selected audience.

As well as improving data analysis skills, students will disseminate the results of their analysis in an outward facing report and presentation.


Placement


Although there is no maximum time recommended for the placement it should not be any less than two weeks undertaken in the Easter break. The placement must be agreed upon by the module supervisor and should be at an industry which is directly related to marine resource management, for example: Fisheries, Public Aquaria, Aquarist Supply Industries, Zoos with aquaria, Government Agencies, NGOs, Conservation Bodies, Charitable Trusts, Pollution Response companies, Research Units or Research Centres. As well as obtaining vocational experience, students will disseminate the results of the experience in an outward facing industry report and presentation.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • Meeting with module supervisor in autumn term to discuss WBL opportunities and data analysis elements of module.
  • Data analysis - Directed self-learning utilising the NOAA Giovanni data portal to explore the effects of seawater temperature on coral bleaching in a geographic area of interest.
  • Placement - Minimum of 2 weeks working in relevant industry.
