This is a full year module available only to students in the Essex Business School undertaking an independent research project, replacing the standard final year project (BE938). Specifically, it will provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge about managing and marketing cooperative and worker-owned businesses. It will offer them the academic knowledge and practical experience to effectively promote consensus and democratic based collective decision-making as well as balancing revenue production with maximizing social impact. It will also explore how collaborative advantage and cooperative networks can be used as sources of enhanced value creation for improving processes, services, and products. The student will be required to complete an independent research project working closely with a cooperative organisation of their choice. The student will actively use the links between the knowledge and skills developed in their academic course to inform a research project based on a specified organisational challenge experienced by their chosen cooperative organisation.
To teach innovative management and marketing techniques through its application and practice and through critical reflection on those processes;
• To increase the employability of students by developing and enhancing their transferrable and subject-specific knowledge and skills within a range of cooperative and worker-owned organisations as well as more conventional private, public, and third sector organisations interested in these perspectives.
• To increase the employability of students by developing and enhancing skills linked to consensus building, collaboration, collective decision-making, producing social value, and effectively running cooperative and worker-owned organisations.
• To develop in students a critical understanding of the ethical issues involved in cooperative management and marketing;
• To encourage better understanding of personal and professional development planning, professional ethics, and reflective learning;
• To introduce students to key skills in creating and sustaining cooperative based value at all levels of the organisation;
Successful completion of the module will allow students to meet the following outcomes:

We will be utilizing a blended learning approach that will include the following elements across the Autumn and Spring Term:
• 3 x 1-hour academic lectures delivered by the module team in the Autumn Term
• 7 Support Classes on various aspects of how to conduct research.
• 6 x 30 minutes scheduled formal supervision meetings in the Autumn and Spring Term to discuss your chosen research challenge, research proposal and receive support throughout the completion of your work.
• 2 Optional Drop-in Group Sessions (Spring Term)
• Weekly office hours to discuss project with module team.
These will be used to create, monitor, and informally evaluate their personal development plans and progress in the module. Contact hours and supervisory sessions will be arranged for you to discuss the progress of your work and receive formative feedback.
