Requisites for this module
This module will explore the role of information and analytics in supporting the development of innovative, sustainable growth strategies and the practical techniques managers can use to design effective information flows.
Data and information are critical to the success of organisations. Organisations that manage information effectively can improve efficiency, be more responsive to market opportunities, achieve competitive advantage and operate more sustainably. As organisations seek to develop innovations and grow in a sustainable way, they are looking for better information to guide decisions.
The aims of this module are:
- To equip participants with the knowledge, understanding and skills to assess how emerging technologies affect business and society.
- To understand key terms and concepts in data and information management and their application to a typical business situation.
- To critically analyse complex, structured and unstructured data and information to promote actionable insights.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Evaluate and critically analyse how emerging technologies will affect business and society and the opportunities and risks that are associated with it.
- Understand key terms and concepts in data and information management and be able to relate these to a typical business situation.
- Critically evaluate current approaches used for collection, management, communication and analysis of commercial, operational and sustainability data, and how this data is used to support decision-making.
- Apply techniques to the analysis of a specific business challenge and use these to identify required information flows.
- Develop and use data visualisation techniques to share original content and insight with a general management audience.
- Demonstrate familiarity with analytical tools available for the analysis of numerical and textual data and use these to find, derive and evaluate information.
- Demonstrate familiarity with current developments and thinking in the information management industry, specifically around ‘big’ data management, analytics, cloud and visualisation techniques.
- Emerging technologies – what they are, and how they impact business and society.
- Data and information management in an organisational setting.
- Data-driven decision making processes.
- Design thinking techniques and their application.
- Data analysis and visualisation techniques; numerical and textual data.
- Current developments in information and data management.
This module will be delivered via:
- One 3-hour session per week.
The sessions will include lectures, workshops, discussion of case studies, class exercises, group based project work and self-study to develop individual and group action plans (including immersion activities, seminars and workshops).

Additional coursework information
- Group presentation.
The presentation will be used to assess students’ understanding of opportunities and risks associated with data management in an organisational setting, the underlying technologies and their familiarity with analytical tools and techniques. The presentation will last for 20 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes taking the form of a Q&A session.
- Individual project report.
The project report will assess student’s ability to critically evaluate organisational approaches to data collection, management, analysis and communication and application of data analysis techniques to generate actionable insights in an organisation environment. The report will be 2,500 words in length. Further instructions and advice will be provide on Moodle.
Exam format definitions
- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
